SCHEDULE CHANGES
We understand that inclement weather can disrupt family schedules. We appreciate your understanding and cooperation as we prioritize the safety of our students.
Unexpected Schedule Changes
Possible Schedule Changes:
One Hour Delay: School Doors open at 8:15; School begins at 9:00
Two Hour Delay: School Doors open at 9:15; School begins at 10:00
School Closure: Schools are not open and YMCA will not operate
Early Dismissal: Students are dismissed earlier than expected. Buses will run on safe routes only. Principals or designees will remain at the school until all students have been picked up.
Prioritizing Our Students
At Hawkins County Schools, the safety of our students is always our top priority. When inclement weather threatens our ability to safely operate, we prioritize the following:
Safe Transportation: We have an obligation to open schools when a majority of our students can safely get to and from school. If it is unsafe for a bus to travel down your road, please do not send your students of driving age down the same roads. If it is unsafe to go to school, please do not attempt the trip.
Communication: As soon as a decision is made about a schedule change (closure or delay), we will inform students and families through the following channels:
Website: Schedule changes will be posted on the homepage of our website.
Personal Notification: Calls and texts will go to phone numbers listed in Skyward signed up for schedule changes.
Social Media: Like the Hawkins County School District page, as well as your student's school page.
App: Download the Hawkins County Schools App from the App Store for iPhone or Google Play for Android.
Local Media: We notify local media outlets when schedule changes have been made.
Important Steps for Families
Stay informed even on days school is in session as inclement weather may necessitate an early dismissal.
Please work with your school to keep them informed of your situation.
Be sure to have updated information in Skyward at all times, contact the school if you need assistance with this.
Considerations
Important Considerations:
Timing of Announcements: We aim to announce schedule changes as soon as possible, typically no later than 6:00 a.m. In some cases, a two-hour delay is used to allow road crews time to clear roads. If conditions do not improve or worsen, an announcement to cancel school will be made by 7:30 a.m.
Temperature-Based Delays: Schedule changes may also occur due to extreme cold, particularly when temperatures dip to near or below zero with wind chill.
Make-up Days: There are 13 days and 2 virtual days built into the calendar for inclement weather. If more than 15 days are missed, the calendar will be reviewed by the director of schools with a recommendation to the school board for action.
Attendance: Students who are absent due to inclement weather will be marked absent.
Transportation: Bus drivers are instructed to use their best judgment and drive only on clear roads. This may cause bus time schedules to vary slightly.
